  • Videos taken shortly after the bombing of a cash-in-transit vehicle shows residents scurrying to gather money in the aftermath of the explosion.
  • Police confirmed suspects in three cars targeted the cash-in-transit vehicle.

The bombing of a cash-in-transit van in Chamdor, Krugersdorp, saw people scrambling for money strewn all over the road after the explosion.

According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili, a group of suspects in at least three cars had targeted the vehicle.

“During the attack of the cash van the suspects used explosives to gain access to the cash.

“The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money as well as leaving cash scattered on the road and a Mercedes Benz burning,” Muridili said.

Videos uploaded by anti-crime activist, Yusuf Abramjee, show scores of people scurrying across the road, trying to gather any leftover notes on the tarmac as a car burns behind them.

Another video shows the street littered with debris from what looks like a car crash, with the wreckage of half a car in the road, with another vehicle still on fire nearby.

Looting condemned

Police can be seen standing in the background, closing off the road.

“We are condemning the act of looting by community members which is a crime,” said Muridili.

“Anyone found in possession of the stolen cash might also face criminal charges.

“Some of the vehicles that are of interest are a BMW and two A4 sedans. Anyone with information on these vehicles as well as the crime is encouraged to contact  Crime Stop 08600 10111 or send tip-offs on MySAPS App. All information received will be treated with confidentiality,” she added.
