President Trump revealed late Monday he will quickly sign an executive order “to briefly suspend immigration into the United States,” in what seemed a drastic escalation of his efforts to eliminate the coronavirus pandemic and improve the economy.

The declaration came hours after U.S. equity markets plunged, with oil rates turning unfavorable for the first time in history. On Monday, three states– Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina– revealed strategies to start resuming some companies.

” In light of the attack from the Invisible Opponent, along with the need to safeguard the jobs of our FANTASTIC American People, I will be signing an Executive Order to momentarily suspend migration into the United States!” the president tweeted.

The exact contours of the president’s scheduled executive order were not instantly clear. The White Home did not immediately elaborate on Trump’s tweeted announcement.

Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Arizona, applauded the policy, and recommended it ought to continue indefinitely. “Thank you, @realDonaldTrump!” he composed. “All migration to the United States need to halt up until every American who desires a job has one!”

Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., on the other hand, stated Trump was trying to find “someone to blame for his own failure.”

” Immigration has nearly stopped and the US has even more cases than any other country,” Beyer wrote, without adjusting his statistic to consider the bigger population in the United States. ” This is just xenophobic scapegoating.”

Added Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.: “Trump stopped working to take this crisis seriously from day 1. His desertion of his function as president has actually cost lives. And now, he’s shamelessly politicizing this pandemic to double down on his anti-immigrant agenda. Enough, Mr. President. The American people are fed up.”
