TOPEKA, Kan. —

Kansas health officials continue to grapple with outbreaks of COVID-19 leading to surges of cases involving locations like meatpacking plants and prisons.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported an increase of 215 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Monday, pushing the state coronavirus totals to 5,245 confirmed cases.

KDHE officials said 136 deaths have now been attributed to the coronavirus, up two from Sunday. Health officials said 553 patients have been hospitalized. There have been 33,358 negative tests conducted at KDHE and private labs and the positive rate is at 6.35%.

State health officials warned earlier this week that we should see higher confirmed cases of COVID-19 as more testing becomes available, some counties catch up in reporting and more cases from correctional facilities are reported.

Wyandotte County and Ford County continue to trade spots on the county tally for most cases. As of Monday, Wyandotte County was home to the most cases in the state with 879 confirmed, compared to Ford County’s 832 cases.

The Ford County outbreak is largely related to a high concentration of cases at meatpacking plants, health officials said.

Seward County, also in southwestern Kansas, is third with 580 cases.

Leavenworth County — where the Lansing State Correctional Facility is located — has 529 cases, and Johnson County has 504 cases. Finney County, another southwestern Kansas community hit hard by COVID-19, now reports 498 cases.

Finney, Ford and Seward counties in southwest Kansas make up more than 36% of the state’s confirmed cases.

While the state does not track the number of people who have recovered from the virus, health officials on the county level say there have been 987 recoveries.

The statewide stay-at-home order in Kansas ended Sunday. Gov. Laura Kelly introduced her plan for reopening the state in phases Thursday night.

Beginning May 11, Wyandotte County may enter the red zone of its ReStart WYCO Road to Recovery document if the health data and metrics allow. The Johnson County Board of Commissioners decided Friday to follow Gov. Laura Kelly’s statewide recovery plan to reopen businesses, following weeks of closure aimed at slowing the spread of coronavirus. However, Johnson County remains under a stay-at-home order through May 10.
