Oregon officials on Saturday reported 1 new death from the novel coronavirus and 76 new cases — bringing the total number of deaths to 87 and known cases to 2,253.

The Oregon Health Authority reported that the latest death was a 59-year-old Lane County man who had underlying medical conditions. He tested positive April 14 and died Friday at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, the agency said in a release.

Coronavirus cases have been linked to 31 of the state’s 36 counties. The five counties that don’t have any known cases — Baker, Gilliam, Harney, Lake and Wheeler — are in the central or eastern parts of Oregon and have a total population of about 34,000.

Multnomah still tops the list of counties with the most known cases, 623. It’s followed by Washington County (459), Marion (432), Clackamas (201) and Deschutes and Linn (both at 71).

Those who’ve died have ranged in age from 41 to 98, according to available information. The average age is 78. All but one had an underlying medical condition at the time of their death, according to state health officials.

At least 536 of the state’s COVID-19 patients, or about 24%, have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, according to the Oregon Health Authority. Twenty-three of those who’ve tested positive are currently on ventilators.

A recent study by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found hypertension, obesity, chronic lung disease, diabetes and cardiovascular disease to be among the most common underlying conditions of COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization.

At least 43 of the state’s coronavirus deaths have been people associated with senior care homes in Oregon, state officials said.

Nationwide, more than 928,000 Americans have tested positive for COVID-19 while the number of deaths has topped 53,000, including at least 692 deaths in Washington.
