A Maryland therapy canine is giving back to doctor on the front lines of the fight versus coronavirus by providing care bundles and smiles to her local medical center.
Appearing on “Fox & Buddies Weekend” with hosts Jillian Mele, University of Maryland Medical trainee Caroline Benzel explained that Loki had begun supplying care long before the outbreak.
” So, Loki is a two-and-a-half-year-old Rottweiler. She was given to me the exact same week I was accepted to medical school. Therefore, we believed it would be an excellent idea to make her a therapy pet for the hospital there,” she specified. “And, as you can see, it’s kind of taken off.”

Benzel told Fox 17 that prior to the COVID-19 break out, she and Loki would invest 3 days a week going to patients and lifting spirits at the hospital.
However, once a moratorium was put on all animal therapy check outs, they decided to “take it to the next level.”
She says it wanted that, the duo began FaceTiming with the patients and health care employees to supply virtual support. Benzel soon observed the pressure nurses were going through having to use personal protective equipment (PPE) around the clock.
” Everybody was using PPE 24/ 7 and since of that, they were getting rashes and inflammation from wearing masks,” she informed Fox 17.
And so, the idea of “hero healing packages” was born.
In the packages, which the medical student compiled through contributions via an Amazon Wishlist, Benzel and Loki offer healthcare workers with things like recovery cream and moisturizer, Gold Bond powder, chewing gum, chapstick, and tea.
” What has the response been?” asked Mele.
” It’s been absolutely nothing but positivity and assistance,” Benzel replied. “I believe that there [have] been a lot of people who simply type of requirement other individuals in the background to reveal them that they are being supported up on the front lines. Whether it be first responders, nurses, custodians … And, we have actually been trying to do that for individuals.”
As of Saturday morning, around 3,000 packages have been contributed– and the effort is no longer just in Maryland.
Loki’s followers in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and North Carolina were motivated by her actions and have been making care plans to reveal their appreciation to all health center personnel.

” It’s been truly hard being a full-time medical student and not being able to be there since we have pulled back and now whatever is through Zoom,” she concluded. “So, this is the best that I can do to attempt to make things much better for all of my co-workers out there on the cutting edge, you understand, making a distinction for people.”
