Medal of Honor recipient Bennie Adkins of Alabama has caught the coronavirus after a long fight.
The Vietnam War hero was 86 when he passed away Friday.
” We are deeply saddened to alert you that after a courageous battle with COVID-19, Command Sergeant Significant Bennie G. Adkins departed this life today, with cherished household at his bedside,” according to the foundation that bears his name.

He invested 20 years in the Army, 13 as a Green Beret.
He deployed to Vietnam 3 times, his heroic efforts in one 1966 battle later recognized in 2014 with the awarding of the Medal of Honor.

At the time he was granted the Medal of Honor, Adkins told a news conference at Fort Benning that he couldn’t accept the honor alone, according to the Duncan Banner, an Oklahoma newspaper.
He stated his father needs to be kept in mind not simply for his heroism in Vietnam.

Adkins is preceded in death by his partner, Mary Adkins, and is survived by one daughter and 2 boys, as well as lots of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
