Georgia Democratic state Rep. Vernon Jones announced Tuesday he is resigning from his seat after last week backing President Trump’s reelection– a relocation that rapidly made him backlash from Georgia Democrats.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jones informed The Rashad Richey Early Morning Show, a talk program in Atlanta, that despite his resignation he would not be leaving the Democratic Celebration because “someone’s got to be in there to hold them responsible– hold them accountable to how they are treating black people [and] root out the bigotry.”
” Turn the lights off, I have left the plantation,” Jones said in a different declaration officially announcing his resignation, according to the Journal-Constitution. “Another person can inhabit that suite. I mean not to finish my term efficient April 22, 2020.”

State Sen. Nikema Williams, chairwoman of the state Democratic Party, provided a declaration soon after Jones’ endorsement of Trump calling Jones an “humiliation,” including, he “does not stand for our worths.”
Jones’ Atlanta-area district includes parts of DeKalb and Rockdale counties. Democratic parties in both counties prepared to censure Jones for the Trump recommendation, according to the Journal-Constitution. Jones, after his initial recommendation, told the paper that ” President Trump’s handling of the economy, his support for traditionally black colleges and his criminal justice efforts drew me to back his project.”
Jones seemed to foreshadow this Tuesday resignation in a Monday night tweet.
” I’ve seen more Democrats assault me for my choice to back @realdonaldtrump than ask me why,” he stated. ” They’ve utilized and abused folks in my community for far too long, taking our elect given. Black Americans are awakening. An uprising is near.”

After announcing his resignation, Jones fired off a handful of combative tweets touting Trump and assaulting Democrats.
” I don’t care what the Democrat Party does to me,” Jones stated in one tweet, apparently estimating himself on The Rashad Richey Morning Program. “What are they going to do? Spank me?”
He continued: “More African-Americans, prior to this pandemic, were working more than any other time in my life time.”
In a last tweet, Jones said that “[t] he left hates me since they can’t control me. They can remain mad.”

Jones likewise will not be looking for reelection, his representative told the Journal-Constitution. Jones has a long history in Georgia politics, according to the paper, including time as the DeKalb County chief executive. Throughout that time he was accused of rape– he claimed the act was consensual and no charges were filed– and was later on examined by a grand jury for supposed corruption. The grand jury could not find proof to prove a criminal activity.
He’s also run for congressional workplace.
” I plan to help the Democrat Party eliminate its bigotry against Black people that are independent and conservative,” Jones stated in the declaration revealing his resignation, according to the Journal-Constitution. “I backed the White guy (Donald J. Trump) that let Blacks out of jail, and they backed the White man (Joe Biden) that put Blacks in prison.”
