UPMC announces plans to give all patients coronavirus antibody test
As Pennsylvania prepares to begin reopening, UPMC continues to work around the clock to make sure all patients coming into their facilities are protected. On Thursday, UPMC announced plans to expand their testing to include antibody testing once it becomes available. (Watch the news conference in the video player above.)Officials said giving that test to even asymptomatic patients will help them determine just how many people were exposed to COVID-19, and eventually lead to creating an antibody to help fight off the virus. “It has the ability for us to create a very specific antibody that will protect individuals in lieu of a vaccination that’s not ready right now. But it’s one of the things that we work on as a world-class academic medical center that can really change the game in the approach to COVID-19 illness and infection,” said Dr. Donald Yealy, chair of emergency medicine at UPMC.UPMC hopes to have progress on determining if there is an antibody for immunity in the next two to four weeks.
