>> FROM WXII 12 NEWS, THIS IS SPECIAL COVERAGE OF THE CORONAVIRUS IMPACT. BRIANA: NORTH CAROLINA’S STAY-AT-HOME ORDER EXPIRES ONE WEEK FROM TODAY. GOVERNOR ROY COOPER SAYS HE’LL GIVE AN UPDATE ON THAT ORDER AND SCHOOLS SOMETIME THIS WEEK. MEANWHILE, THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE CATCHING AND DYING FROM THE CORONAVIRUS HASN’T LEVELED OFF IN NORTH CAROLINA YET. IT’S BEEN LESS THAN A MONTH SINCE THE FIRST PERSON DIED FROM CORONAVIRUS IN OUR STATE. SO FAR, IT’S CLAIMED 244 LIVES. 32 OF THEM CALLED THE TRIAD HOME. RIGHT NOW, MORE THAN 7,000 PEOPLE HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS IN THE STATE. ROUGHLY 10% OF THEM ARE IN THE TRIAD. WE KNOW OF AT LEAST 730 PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED IN OUR AREA. THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES IS NOT REPORTING THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE RECOVERED, BUT SOME COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENTS ARE. NEARLY A HUNDRED PEOPLE HAVE RECOVERED IN FORSYTH COUNTY, ACROSS THE AREA, 245 PEOPLE WHO HAVE RECOVERED IN FIVE COUNTIES INCLUDING FORSYTH, ALAMANCE AND DAVIDSON, DAVIE, AND THAT MEANS MORE THAN A THIRD OF THE PEOPLE WHO TESTED POSITIVE IN THE TRIAD HAVE BEATEN THE VIRUS. HERE’S A LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF CASES OVER TIME. THE ORANGE LINE SHOWS THE MORE THAN 7200 CASES IN THE STATE SINCE THE FIRST PERSON WAS DIAGNOSED BACK ON MARCH THIRD. THE BLUE LINE SHOWS THOW MANY PEOPLE TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE VIRUS IN THE TRIAD THE FIRST INMATE AT A NORTH CAROLINA STATE PRISON HAS DIED FROM COVID-19. THIS MAN WAS INCARCERATED AT PENDER CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION. HE WAS IN HIS LATE 50’S AND HAD UNDERLYING MEDICAL CONDITIONS. PRISON OFFICIALS SAY HE WAS PUT INTO ISOLATION ON APRIL 8 WHEN HE STARTED SHOWING SYMPTOMS. FIVE DAYS LATER HE WAS HOSPITALIZED AND HE DIED YESTERDAY. THERE HAVE ALREADY BEEN DEATHS REPORTED AT A FEDERAL PRISON IN NORTH CAROLINA. FEVER IS ONE OF THIS VIRUS’ WARNING SIGNS. A LOCAL BUSINESS SAYS IT HAS A WAY TO HELP DETECT IF SOMEONE’S RUNNING A TEMPERATURE. BILL O’NEIL JOINS US WITH THE STORY. BILL: THE OWNER OF WYN TECHNOLOGIES SAYS HIS THERMAL TEMPERATURE MONITORING SYSTEM CAN TELL IF SOMEONE’S RUNNING A FEVER SIMPLY BY PASSING IN FRONT OF THIS CAMERA.>> IT RECORDS IT WITHIN MILLISECONDS. BILL: HE DEMONSTRATED IT FOR US. THE NUMBERS YOU SEE ABOVE HIS HEAD SHOW HIS BODY TEMPERATURE, NO FEVER. I TRIED IT NEXT. FORTUNATELY, I DIDN’T HAVE A FEVER EITHER. MY BODY TEMPERATURE, AS DETECTED BY THE MONITORING SYSTEM, WAS NORMAL.>> HOPEFULLY THIS WILL HELP KEEP BUSINESSES OPEN AS WELL, A KEEP EMPLOYEES SAFE. BILL: BRYAN KELLY SAYS HIS THERMAL TEMPERATURE MONITORING SYSTEM IS DIFFERENT FROM ONES USED BY SOME OVERSEAS AIRPORTS THAT RELY SOLELY ON THERMAL CAMERAS. HE SAYS HIS SYSTEM USES A CALIBRATION DEVICE, MAKING IT MORE ACCURATE, IDENTIFYING SOMEONES TEMPERATURE WITHIN HALF A DEGREE.>> BECAUSE ACCURACY RIGHT NOW TO ME IS PARAMOUNT FOR WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE WORLD. BILL: KELLY SAYS HIS SYSTEM CAN PROVIDE PROTECTION FOR FRONT LINE HEALTH CARE WORKERS, AS WELL WAREHOUSE EMPLOYEES, AND ANY BUSINESS THAT RELIES ON STAFF AND CUSTOMERS ENTERING THE WORKPLACE.>> IF WE CAN PREVENT ONE SICK PERSON FROM COMING INTO ONE COMPANY, OR ONE PLACE OF BUSINESS OR ONE RESTAURANT. THINK ABOUT WHAT IT WILL DO. BILL: KELLY WRAPPED A HOT TOWEL AROUND HIS HEAD TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SOMEONE WITH AN ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES COMES. — COMES IN CONTACT WITH HIS MONITORING SYSTEM. AN ALARM GOES OFF. ALERTING YOU SOMEONE RUNNING A FEVER MAY HAVE JUST ENTERED YOUR BUSINESS.>> IT’S SAFETY, AND FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES SAFETY FOR YOURSELF, YOUR BUSINESS, AND TO HOPEFULLY KEEP YOUR BUSINESS OPEN. BILL: THIS IS A BRAND NEW SYSTEM. THE OWNER SAYS HE’S GOTTEN LOTS OF CALLS, AND IS DURING — CURRENTLY NEGOTIATING A DEAL WITH A BANK IN TEXAS. BRIANA: VERY INTERESTING. NEW TONIGHT, OFFICIALS SAY THE FIRST DEATH IN THE U.S. TIED TO THE CORONAVIRUS HAPPENED THREE WEEKS EARLIER THAN THEY THOUGHT. THE CDC SAYS TWO PEOPLE WHO DIED IN CALIFORNIA BACK IN FEBRUARY HAD CORONAVIRUS. AT THE TIME TESTING WAS RESTRICTED TO PEOPLE WHO HAD BEEN TRAVELLING AND HAD SYMPTOMS. DRONES ARE GOING TO START DELIVERING CRITICAL SUPPLIES FOR FIGHTING THE VIRUS IN NORTH CAROLINA. THE DOT ANNOUNCED THE PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP THIS MORNING. THE DRONE DELIVERIES WILL HAPPEN IN THE RALEIGH AND CHARLOTTE AREAS AND WILL INCLUDE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND OTHER MEDICAL SUPPLIES, AS WELL AS FOOD. THIS IS MEANT TO REDUCE STRAIN ON MEDICAL SUPPLY CHAINS. MOST DAYS, IT’S BEEN WARM AND SUNNY ENOUGH TO GET OUTSIDE. BETWEEN THAT, AND THE STAY HOME ORDER, A LOCAL PARK THAT’S USUALLY POPULAR IN THE SPRING ANYWAY IS SEEING EVEN MORE VISITORS. KENNY BECK IS WORKING FROM HOME. HE JOINS US LIVE NOW WITH THAT STORY. KENNY: A SPOKESPERSON FOR FORSYTH COUNTY PARKS AND REC TELLS ME ATTENDANCE THIS MONTH AT TANGLEWOOD PARK IN CLEMMONS HAS BEEN EXTREMELY HIGH SO FAR BUT HERE’S THE QUESTION. IS THAT A GOOD THING? YOU CAN HAVE MORE THAN 100 ACRES AT THE FORSYTH COUNTY DAVIE COUNTY LINE. YOU CAN STILL PLAY GOLF, RUN, FISH, SEE THE HORSES, TAKE A LEISURELY STROLL ALONG THE YADKIN RIVER OR STOP AND SMELL THE — THESE ARE NOT ROSES, B YOU GET THE IDEA. LET’S FACE IT WE COULD ALL USE A LITTLE FRESH AIR AND RELAXATION RIGHT ABOUT NO>> THERE’S A LOT OF SPACE IN DIFFERENT THINGS TO DO.>> OPEN, OUTDOORS, TAKING YOUR MINDS OFF OF THEM. KENNY: ATTENDANCE HAS BEEN EXTREMELY HIGH IN APRIL. BUT IS HEAVY ATTENDANCE ANYWHERE A GOOD THING?>> IT IS BUSY. WE GOT COMPLAINTS IN WE TRY TO GET PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE OF SIGNIFICANT VIOLATIONS. WE’RE DIDN’T — WE DIDN’T REALLY SEE THAT. KENNY: DEPUTY COUNTY MANAGER DAMON SANDERS-PRATT SAYS WHILE EVERYONE NEEDS TO TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR FOLLOWING THE GUIDELINES, HE’S PLEASED SO MANY PEOPLE ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF WHAT THE PARK HAS TO OFFER.>> PEOPLE ARE ON THE TRAIL BUT IT IS NOT SHOULDER TO SHOULDER. IF IT BECOMES A PROBLEM, WE HAVE BASKETBALL COURTS AND VOLLEYBALL COURTS, AND THOSE THAT APPRECIATE THE FACT. WE ARE GRABBED THAT WE CAN PROVIDE THAT SERVICE DURING THIS TIME WHERE WE CAN BE PARTICULARLY STRESSFUL. KENNY: HE SAID PEOPLE NEED TO EXERCISE AND THEY ARE GOING TO EXERCISE DURING THIS TIME. THAT ARE TO HAVE THEM DOING IT IN A SAFE CONTAINED AREA RATHER THAN ANYWHERE ELSE. BRIANA: AMERICANS OVERWHELMINGLY SUPPORT A SECOND WAVE OF CORONAVIRUS RELIEF MONEY. 84% OF PEOPLE SURVEYED SAY THEY WANT ANOTHER WAVE OF STIMULUS CHECKS. THAT’S ACCORDING TO WALLET HUB. NEARLY 160 MILLION AMERICANS ARE LESS THAN 3 MONTHS AWAY FROM RUNNING OUT OF MONEY. MOST AMERICANS THINK EVERY PERSON SHOULD GET A STIMULUS CHECK BUT ATTITUDES CHANGE WITH AGE. MILLENNIALS ARE MORE LIKELY TO THINK STIMULUS CHECKS SHOULD ONLY BE GIVEN TO PEOPLE EXPERIENCING INCOME LOSS.
