One more person has died due to coronavirus, bringing the state’s death toll to 190. A 93-year-old woman with underlying medical conditions in Clackamas County tested positive on June 6 and died on June 20 at her residence.
Multnomah County saw the most new cases on Sunday at 84, the most it has reported in a single day. The state’s most populous county entered into Phase 1 of reopening last Friday, which allows for limited reopening of some businesses and gatherings of up to 25 people with social distancing guidelines.
Clackamas County had 12 new cases, and Washington County has 22 new cases. Gov. Kate Brown decided to treat the three Portland metro counties as one moving forward in reopening, but Clackamas County leaders asked to be delinked from Washington and Multnomah to enter Phase 2.
Less populous counties in eastern Oregon have also experienced high case numbers over the past week.
Umatilla County, an eastern Oregon county with a little under 78,000 residents, had 34 new cases on Sunday, which accounts for 14% of the county’s total cases. The small county has had an uptick in cases over the past few days, and the county’s public health director, Joseph Fiumara, said most of the new cases stem from workplace exposures.
“What we’re seeing a lot of is people with mild symptoms, and in some cases, people just don’t believe they’re actually sick,” Fiumara said.
Union County, which had the state’s largest coronavirus outbreak stemming from a church and voluntarily returned to Phase 1 of reopening last week, has seen case numbers drop to single digits over the past few days.
Lincoln County, a coastal county with the state’s largest workplace outbreak in Newport, has had a drop in cases as well since the COVID-19 outbreak from a seafood processing plant that infected at least 125 people.
