SO WITH THAT. I’M GOING TO IT UP WITH SCOTT. GOVERNOR STATE MEDICAL ASSOCIATION CAME OUT TODAY SAYING THAT WE SHOULD ISSUE A STATEWIDE MASKED MAN BARRY YOU’VE DONE 13 COUNTIES SO FAR. WHY NOT DO A STATEWIDE MANDATE FOR MASKS? WELL WHAT I WOULD TELL YOU, IS THAT THE THOSE INDIVIDUALS AT THE STATE MEDICAL NICE ASSOCIATION AND I HAVE THE SAME GOAL AND THE SAME GOAL IS THAT WE INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN OUR STATE THAT ARE WEARING MASKS. WE MAY NOT A HUNDRED PERCENT AGREE ON THE BEST WAY TO ACCOMPLISH THAT YOU KNOW, I KNOW THAT EVERY DENTIST I KNOW WANTS A HUNDRED PERCENT COMPLIANCE. FOR EVERY KID TO BRUSH THEIR TEETH EVERY SINGLE NIGHT SOME KIDS IF YOU TELL THEM YOU HAVE TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH. THEY JUST WON’T DO IT. IT’S JUST THE REALITY OF WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES, MY VIEW IS MUCH LIKE WE HAVE HAVE DONE IN THE PAST MUCH LIKE WE DID IN LEAKE COUNTY AND IN ATTALA COUNTY AND SHOBHA COUNTY AND IN NEWTON COUNTY AND IN JASPER COUNTY IF WE HAVE ISSUE ORDERS. THAT ARE SPECIFIC BASED UPON GUIDELINES THAT WE TELL PEOPLE ABOUT FOR INSTANCE THE 13 COUNTIES THAT WE HAVE CURRENTLY INCLUDED. INCLUDE THOSE COUNTIES THAT HAVE AT LEAST 200 CASES. OVER THE LAST 14 DAYS AND HAD A OR REACHED THRESHOLD OF HAVING. 500 CASES PER HUNDRED THOUSAND RESIDENTS AND SO THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT ARE MOST UM, WE BELIEVE ARE MOST IMPORTANT. AND WE BELIEVE SHINING A LIGHT ON THOSE COUNTIES WILL HELP GET COMPLIANCE IN THOSE COUNTIES. THE REALITY IS THAT IF WE JUST ISSUE A STATEWIDE MANDATE THERE ARE GOING TO BE PEOPLE IN OUR STATE WHO SAY WELL I’M IN TISHOMINGO COUNTY. AND HE JUST DID THAT BECAUSE THINGS ARE REALLY BAD IN HINDS COUNTY. AND SO I’M NOT GOING TO NECESSARILY ADHERE TO IT. OUR GOAL HAS TO BE HOW DO WE GET THE BEST? IS NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS? ADHERING TO WEARING A MASK WHEN THEY’RE IN PUBLIC. AND ENSURING THAT THEY MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES AND WE THINK THAT THE APPROACH THAT WE’RE CURRENTLY TAKING IS THE BEST WAY TO DO THAT. I APPRECIATE THE OPINION OF OUR STATE’S MEDICAL COMMUNITY. THEY ARE ON THE FRONT LINES AND AND THEY ARE WORKING HARD, BUT I ALSO WILL TELL YOU THAT ALL OF US. HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY HERE. I NEED THOSE IN THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY AND THOSE IN OUR HOSPITALS TO ADHERE TO OUR EXECUTIVE ORDERS WHICH REQUIRE TWENTY FIVE PERCENT OF CAPACITY IN HOSPITALS FOR COVID PATIENTS. I NEED INDIVIDUAL MISSISSIPPIANS AND OTHER PARTS OF OUR STATE TO WEAR MASKS WHEN THEY’RE IN PUBLIC. WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND. AS I SAID YESTERDAY. ON SOCIAL MEDIA THAT WE OR NOT ENEMIES WITH EACH OTHER OUR ENEMY HERE IS THE VIRUS. AND WE HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO TRY TO KEEP THE VIRUS FROM BEING SPREAD. BECAUSE IF WE DON’T OUR
Mississippi State Medical Association calls for statewide mask mandate
The Mississippi State Medical Association is supporting physicians’ calls for a statewide mask mandate, which requires everyone to wear masks in public spaces.Gov. Tate Reeves said he and MSMA officials have the same goal to increase the number of people in Mississippi who are wearing masks.”We may not 100% agree on how to accomplish that,” Reeves said. Reeves said the state is focusing on placing additional restrictions on areas of the state identified as hot spots. An order went into effect Monday for 13 counties, including Hinds, Madison and Rankin, that requires masks to be worn in public. “Our goal has to be the best, highest number of people wearing masks and making sure they observe social distancing guidelines,” Reeves said. The daily number of COVID-19 cases in Mississippi has been trending upwards over the past few weeks as communities have reopened throughout the state. During the pandemic, physicians have been working on the front lines to care for patients diagnosed with COVID-19 while continuing to provide critical care for all patients in need. MSMA said Mississippians can continue to demonstrate their support to slow the spread of COVID-19 by practicing social distancing, frequently washing their hands, and staying home whenever possible, but additional measures need to be taken. They want to ensure critical medical resources can be available to meet the needs of all Mississippians, including a statewide mask mandate that helps reduce community spread of the COVID-19.”We strongly believe that without a statewide mask mandate, our state’s health care system cannot sustain the trajectory of this outbreak, which could ultimately result in the loss of the lives of many Mississippians,” according to the MSMA. “With the staggering toll of this pandemic on our state, we need to act quickly and decisively. We can defeat COVID-19 in the same way we have historically defeated public health threats in the past. Science and evidence have made it absolutely clear that COVID-19 is not behind us, and we must resist the urge to relax the measures that have proven effective in keeping people safe.”
