In southeast Wisconsin, WISN 12 News reporter Hillary Mintz saw many customers wearing masks Tuesday heading into Menards, where it’s mandatory.
“If you see someone who’s not wearing a mask what do you think?” Mintz asked a customer.
“Well, at this point in the game, they’re taking a chance,” Rick Koehnlein said.
For those not wearing one, they could be subjected to mask shaming.
“So, you would call someone out?” Mintz asked another customer.
“I will. I’ll be honest with you. I’m very aggressive about that,” Brahim Ahmad-Yahia said.
Some told Mintz they don’t want the confrontation. Others are turning to social media.
A post on the Next Door app talked about a mask shaming incident at the New Berlin Walmart, where a customer was apparently “chastised.” More than 100 people commented with varying opinions.
“They just told me I couldn’t be in the store without it,” customer Tom Gorzalski said.
“Oh, you got kicked out?” Mintz asked.
“Right,” he said.
Even though Menards sells masks inside for a $1, Gorzalski said he’s not a fan.
“When you’re not here, what do you do?” Mintz asked.
“I don’t wear it,” Gorzalski said.
Doctors recommend it.
“Given how highly contagious the virus is and how people can spread and transmit the virus before they’re having symptoms, having large numbers of people wearing masks can prevent the virus from getting into the environment, retail places, grocery stores,” said Dr. Ryan Westergaard, of the Wisconsin Bureau for Communicable Diseases.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said everyone should wear masks in public places, even outdoors.
