Coronavirus updates: Sacramento Sheriff’s Office won’t enforce Newsom’s mask order

LATEST June 19, 2:30 p.m. Construction on Google’s new campus in Mountain View has been halted twice in the last week after workers tested positive for the coronavirus.

After a worker tested positive Sunday, the site was shut briefly down for sanitation before closing again after another worker tested positive Wednesday. Construction is expected to resume next Monday.

June 19, 2:05 p.m. Here’s a rundown of Bay Area counties reporting new coronavirus cases and deaths. As more counties release their data, this information will be updated.

—Alameda reported one new death and 64 new cases. The case total is 4,702 and the death toll is 118.

—Contra Costa reported one new death and 37 new cases. The case total is 2,148 and the death toll is 56.

—Napa reported 10 new cases to increase its total to 216. The death toll remains four.

–San Francisco reported 37 new cases to increase its total to 3,057. The death toll remains 47.

—San Mateo reported four new deaths and 43 new cases. The case total is 2,721 and the death toll is 103.

—Santa Clara reported 40 new cases to increase its total to 3,398. The death toll remains 152.

—Sonoma reported 19 new cases to increase its total to 822. The death toll remains four.

—Marin reported 23 new cases to increase its total to 837. The death toll remains 18.

—Solano reported 49 new cases to increase its total to 860. The death toll remains 23.

June 19, 1:45 p.m. Santa Clara County announced that two new free pop-up testing sites will open on June 22.

The centers are the cafeteria at Andrew Hill High School in San Jose and the Santa Clara Northside Branch Library.

June 19, 1:00 p.m. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday it will not enforce California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s statewide order that requires all Californians to wear face coverings in common and public indoor spaces and outdoors when physical distancing is not possible.

“The Sheriff’s Office recommends that everyone continue exercising safe practices, including wearing masks pursuant to the Governor’s recommendation, especially around those in high-risk groups,” the sheriff’s office announced in a statement released Friday. “However, due to the minor nature of the offense, the potential for negative outcomes during enforcement encounters, and anticipating the various ways in which the order may be violated, it would be inappropriate for deputies to criminally enforce the Governor’s mandate.”

The announcement comes at a time the country is grappling with protests over the use of force from members of law enforcement.

June 19, 12:45 p.m. San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced the city is creating a new $1.5 million loan program to help African American businesses impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The program is called the African American Small Business Revolving Loan Fund, and compliments existing city programs to aid businesses “historically underserved by private banks and other traditional sources of fundraising.”

“For generations, Black-owned businesses have been marginalized and discriminated against, all too often having difficulty securing the financing they need to open and operate,” Breed said in a statement. “In the wake of COVID-19, businesses all over San Francisco are struggling to survive, and Black-owned businesses in particular have been especially hard hit. This new loan fund is a step in the right direction to right past wrongs and help San Francisco businesses stabilize and thrive.”

June 19, 11:40 a.m. Santa Clara County is choosing not to provide a timeline for reopening additional businesses such as hair salons and gyms despite the county being two weeks removed from the previous reopening date.

County health officer Dr. Sara Cody had previously stated that county officials would determine whether to relax restrictions every two weeks if the county’s indicators for reopening did not worsen.

June 19, 11:30 a.m. The Oakland Unified School District has announced it will make a final decision on July 10 on whether the upcoming school year will be entirely remote or instead use a blended model of both in-person and remote instruction.

The school year begins on August 10.

June 19, 9:30 a.m. Tattoo parlors, waxing and nail salons are now allowed to reopen in San Mateo County, despite a growing number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the county. To date, the county has reported 2,678 cases and 99 deaths.

“We are moving away from opening businesses according to certain categories and instead focusing on behaviors and practices,” San Mateo County Health Officer Dr. Scott Morrow told KPIX earlier this week. “As we ease restrictions, the power to control the spread of the virus lies with individuals and communities. Collective behavior will determine our destiny. If enough people, businesses, or organizations in the community do not follow the protective recommendations, the virus may spread with abandon.”

Napa County also opened similar businesses Friday, though the county’s case statistics are relatively low, at 206 confirmed cases.

June 19, 8:50 a.m. The head of the World Health Organization said the coronavirus pandemic is “accelerating” and that more than 150,000 cases were reported yesterday — the highest single-day number so far.

In a media briefing on Friday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said nearly half of the newly reported cases were from the Americas, with significant numbers from South Asia and the Middle East.

“We are in a new and dangerous phase,” he said, warning that restrictive measures are still needed to stop the pandemic. “Many people are understandably fed up with being at home [and] countries are understandably eager to open up their societies.” But Tedros warned that the virus is still “spreading fast” and that measures like social distancing, mask wearing and hand-washing are still critical.

He noted the toll would be especially great on refugees in particular, of whom more than 80% live in mostly developing nations.

“We have a shared duty to everything we can to prevent, detect and respond to the transmission of COVID-19 detected among refugees in hospitals.”

June 19, 8:40 a.m. The county with the highest number of COVID-19 cases is opening restaurants for outdoor dining and retail for indoor shopping Friday.

Alameda County is also allowing outdoor fitness classes and limited religious services under its modified shelter-in-place order.
