According to the Louisiana Department of Health, 34,709 coronavirus cases have been reported in the state. There have also been 2,440 COVID-19 deaths recorded.

The latest numbers were released Sunday by the health department.

The seafood industry, the oil business and festival-driven tourism all have taken a hit as the state battles the spread of coronavirus.

The St. Mary Parish festival that celebrates oil and seafood is just one example of the economic triple whammy.

The chairman of the board that runs the festival says no firm decision has been made yet on whether this year’s fest will go on, but other larger festivals have already canceled.

Louisiana has been granted federal authority to help feed more than 611,000 students during the coronavirus pandemic.

State officials announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture gave the OK to provide the assistance for families of children in kindergarten through 12th grade who normally get free or reduced-price school meals. State public schools closed March 16.
