A child has died from COVID-19-related illness for the first time in Arizona, Yuma County announced Thursday.

The disease caused by the new coronavirus has affected people who are older or who have certain underlying health conditions more seriously than it has younger people.

Children, in general, have not gotten as sick as adults with this coronavirus.

The child had “multiple serious underlying medical conditions,” Yuma County said in a news release. The county said it was the state’s first pediatric death associated with COVID-19.

“It is our deepest regret to share the news of the first COVID-19-related pediatric death in Arizona,” Diana Gomez, the director of the county’s public health district, said in a written statement. “News like this not only resonates within the health community, but with every resident. We are heartbroken and extend our deepest sympathy to the child’s friends and family.”

Gomez said no further information about the child would be released in order to protect the family’s privacy.

Arizona cases of COVID-19 totaled 9,945 as of Thursday, with 450 known deaths, according to numbers released on Thursday by the Arizona Department of Health Services.

People 65 and older made up 354 of the 450 total deaths. A large number of deaths have occurred in long-term care facilities.

As of Thursday, the state’s database showed no deaths under age 20. Sixteen people aged 20 to 44 have died, as have 25 people aged 45 to 54 and 55 people aged 55 to 64.

Of the 9,945 cases, 33% of the patients have chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiac disease, hypertension, chronic pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease or chronic liver disease. In addition, 44% of all cases are considered “high-risk,” meaning the individual is either over 65 or has a chronic condition.

Of all confirmed cases, 6% of the patients are younger than 20, 38% are aged 20 to 44, 17% are aged 45 to 54, 16% are aged 55 to 64 and 23% are over 65. This aligns with the proportions of testing done for each age range.
