Doctors with CHI Health and Creighton School of Medicine, infectious disease and health lab met to discuss lessons learned from the coronavirus outbreak and what to expect in the fall.CHI Health said there are currently 61 COVID-19 patients in all 14 CHI Health hospitals, seven patients are currently on ventilators. As of June 1o, CHI Health had cared fro 621 COVID-19 patients in Nebraska and southwest Iowa. It says the number does not include hundreds of other patients treated in clinics and emergency rooms.It said 20,000 tests have been performed at the CHI Health Core Lab, resulting in 2,400 positive tests. Doctors discussed projections for fall of 2020.It said Nebraska is projected to have about 500 new cases a day beginning in August. But doctors don’t believe as many people will be in the hospital. They also believe they will see more younger patients, who won’t be as sick.Doctors said they will be better prepared for the second wave and said the CHI Core Health Lab is ramping up, ready to double testing by August. “We have a lot more requests out there for testing. We want to be able to test all of our patients and their conditions. We want to double what we do now, ” said Dr. Stephen Cavalieri with the Creighton, CHI Health Lab.CEO of CHI Health, Dr. Cliff Robertson said the health system did not experience any shortages during the pandemic. He said they had enough equipment and staff. He said they are using a Texas-based manufacturer for personal protective equipment.”We believe the novel coronavirus will be around for a while and that we will be caring for patients for years to come,” said Dr. Robertson.Doctors said it’s vital to maintain social distancing, even as the state relaxes restrictions.”We’ve done pretty well so far. We’re doing pretty well now, virus wise and activity wise in the community, but it’s not gone, and we need to make sure that we do what we need to to make sure that it stays controllable,” said Dr. David Quimby, CHI Health.CHI Health is also holding drive-thru mask giveaways Saturday.
