Worcester officials announced Thursday afternoon that the city has had 1,542 confirmed COVID-19 cases, an increase of 97 over the numbers announced Wednesday.
Worcester County has had 3,798 cases and 155 deaths. The most densely populated counties have had the most cases — such as Suffolk County, which includes Boston — have had the highest rate of infection.
In Massachusetts as a whole, of the 195,076 COVID-19 tests performed, 46,023 cases have been confirmed. There were 3,079 new cases statewide in the last day, and 2,360 deaths since the outbreak began, according the the latest figures from the state Department of Public Health.
The highest rates of cases and of hospitalizations are in the oldest age categories: The average age of COVID-19 patients is 54, and the average age of hospitalized patients is 68.
Deaths are also highest among the oldest victims: The average age of those dying with the virus is 82. And 97.9% of those who died had an underlying condition, according the public health department.
There have been 8,435 cases among long-term care facilities residents and workers, and 1,316 deaths in long-term care facilities.

Some communities’ counts may be inflated by a high number of cases at long-term care facilities.
Several area communities had not reported new cases in several days, and the numbers released by the state Wednesday showed significant increases.
