THE substantial eruption of Kilauea volcano on Hawaii in 2018 was activated by exceptionally heavy rains, according to a brand-new analysis. The water triggered pressure to build up deep inside the volcano, fracturing the rock and permitting hot lava to increase.
The finding boosts the idea that rainfall can impact volcanoes and hence that climate change might lead to more eruptions.
