During the coronavirus epidemic, individuals from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds are being hit especially hard, according to emerging information.
The most recent figures assembled by the UK’s Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre suggests that of almost 5000 people seriously ill with covid-19 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland whose ethnicity was understood, 34 per cent were from BAME backgrounds. People from such groups make up just 14 per cent of the population of England and Wales.
