- Commuters flocked to Cape Town’s CBD on Monday as the country eased into lockdown Level 3.
- Cars, taxis and pedestrians crowded the streets of the Mother City
- Many happy consumers queued for booze ahead of stores opening, despite the winter chill. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has, however, urged South Africans not to panic buy alcohol.
Cape Town’s streets were bustling on the first day of June, as the country moved to lockdown Level 3, which saw the economy opening even more.
Up to eight million citizens were expected to return to work on Monday.
The central business district was crowed with cars streaming into the city from surrounding highways. Thousands of pedestrians also walked to their various destinations.
Others were spotted queuing outside liquor outlets, with the sale of alcohol now permitted for the first time in over two months.
And while some sense of normality has returned to this major metro, people’s face masks served as a stark reminder of the pandemic we still find ourselves in.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize on Monday announced that the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases is at 34 357. The total number of deaths is 705, with 16 808 recoveries.
During a briefing in Cape Town Mkhize urged South Africans not to panic buy or over-indulge in alcohol.
